NRAS funded student housing.
As the first university buildings to receive National rent Affordability Scheme (NRAS) funding these halls of residence provide low-cost housing in an inclusive environment. The cutting-edge design centred around sustainability, accessibility and layout and fostered a strong sense of community and integration within each hall.
The facility comprises 20sqm self-contained rooms with kitchen and ensuite bathroom – moving away from traditional dormitory accommodation to a hotel-style configuration. Two blocks border bushland and overlook playing fields and a central courtyard to provide a spacious and communal space for students living away from home.
The majority of the facility’s roof contains solar panelling – 2000sqm in total, one of the largest residential solar installations in Australia. Roof rainwater is collected in a 100,000-litre tank; grey water from baths, showers and kitchen sinks is collected, cleaned and re-used for toilet flushing and irrigation.
